Sophie Writes about Writing about Dance

Juncture – Day 14
Sunday 18 March

Sophie Unwin (pictured below, far right), a recent graduate of York St John University, is embarking on a career as a professional dance artist. We were delighted that she came to the Writing Dance workshop led by our own Marketing & Communications Manager Antony Dunn.

We asked her to write a few words about the experience…

“How important is dance writing? I don’t know if I speak for myself here but writing dance copy is something I have readily neglected, probably because it seems quite impossible to describe a language which moves beyond words, with a piece of writing vigorous and authentic enough to hold the attention of the public.

“The Writing Dance workshop with Antony Dunn gave me much to think about, exploring writing tasks which urged us to forget about obvious and vague descriptions and move towards the concise and concrete.

“Having the opportunity to write without thinking, write without stopping, and question how much we can say with few words was really useful for myself as an artist shifting from education to industry, understanding the importance of quality and appropriate dance writing and its communicative value to an audience.

“A really valuable workshop!”
